What is the AFGE Service Internship?
The AFGE Service Internship is a collaborative program between AFGE and the National Labor College (NLC) that provides interns with the opportunity to earn college credits while doing union work in the field. Doing this work in the context of an internship gives the member an in-depth look at various aspects of union work and an opportunity to reflect upon their union experience.
How Many Credits Can I Receive?
You can receive 3 credits hours (equivalent to 135 internship hours) for successfully completing the course.
What Are the Course Requirements?
The course requires you to complete a project that you have developed with a Local Officer and has been approved by the Field Services and Education Department (FSED) and your NLC instructor. The project should include at a minimum 135 hours of work and identify an individual that will be serving as your internship supervisor (i.e. Local or Council Officer, Chief Steward, or an authorized District or National representative). You will also be required to maintain activity/work and observation logs (verified by your internship supervisor) and submit a short analytical paper reflecting your experience. Any other requirements will be provided to you by your course instructor. Additional requirements explaining the awarding of the stipend will be sent to you once we receive your interest form.
Who Reviews My Materials and Paper?
Your local service internship supervisor will review your daily log and your NLC Instructor (assigned to you when you register for the class) will review all required course work. In order to receive the stipend ($1500 for the first internship and $2500 for the advanced internship), a designee from FSED will review all required course documentation and your transcript.
Do I Get a Grade for This Class?
All internships are graded on a Pass-Fail basis. If you would like a grade, you can indicate that on your online registration. All grades and other feedback will be sent directly to you.
What Is the Cost to Enroll in the Class?
None! AFGE pays all NLC related fees for the class.
