"Education is the key to fulfilling our potential as union leaders and stewards of social change."

John Sturdivant
AFGE National President
1988-1997

If you are a member of AFGE, you and members of your family are eligible for scholarship assistance from AFGE
and from Union Privilege. Available to all federal employees and their children is the Federal Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA).

AFGE Scholarships

John N. Sturdivant (JNS) served as President of the AFGE from 1988 to 1997. He strongly believed in the role of education in empowering union members and their families to become effective leaders – in the workplace, in the union, and in the community. To celebrate John’s legacy, and to honor his commitment to building a better life for all AFGE members and their children, the AFGE National Executive Board has established two scholarship programs: (1) JNS Family Scholarship and (2) the JNS Scholarship at the National Labor College.

JNS Family Scholarship

Beginning in January through March 31, 2008, AFGE members and their dependents will be eligible to apply for the John N. Sturdivant (JNS) Family Scholarships. Twenty-five scholarships of $1000 each will be awarded in 208 for AFGE members and dependents who are enrolled in an accredited institution in a course of study leading to a 2-year, 4-year, or graduate degree. The JNS Family Scholarships are administered by the Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA). Download your application today. JNS Scholarship at the National Labor College
Former President John N. Sturdivant was one of the first graduates of the college degree program at the George Meany Center (now the National Labor College) in January 1980. The JNS Labor Scholarship was established by AFGE’s National Executive Board to honor his memory and to encourage AFGE leaders and staff to attend the National Labor College.

The John N. Sturdivant (JNS) scholarship at the National Labor College was established by AFGE’s National Executive Board to honor his memory and to encourage AFGE leaders and staff to attend the National Labor College.

The JNS Labor Scholarships are open to all AFGE members in good standing and their dependents, and to all AFGE staff (with at least 1 year of service) attending undergraduate and graduate programs at the National Labor College. All applicants must complete a scholarship application for each academic term. Applicants are encouraged to apply early for greatest consideration.

Awards for both undergraduate and graduate assistance are limited to $2500 per semester and $5000 per year. AFGE will notify applicants of the status of their application. Download your application today.
